I was “horse healthy” as a teenager, not crazy like folks called me. I had a yearning deep in me that not only did I want a horse, but I needed a horse to become and be healthy. After earning the money, I bought a half-Morgan Pinto mare that became my soulmate. She taught me much and helped me heal from childhood abuse.
I learned from the 4-H horse program, clinics, books, and observation as I couldn’t afford lessons. She was the first horse I finished the Vermont 100-mile competitive trail ride with. We both wanted more long-distance trail riding.
As I needed a younger horse, I bought a yearling stud colt, named Equinox Royalty who was a grandson of a 100-mile winner. He carried me further on my healing and learning journey to becoming a partner who won many championships. He also taught me what the Lakota horse folks know about becoming one with the spirit of a horse.
His last daughter, Woodrun Pennyroyal aka Gem, has been with me for over 30 years. She is the queen mare of the barn and a teacher for many people with PTSD, addictions, autism, and ADHD. She is also the one to get on bareback and go for a soothing ride in the woods.
Our Century Club ride was our first dressage class. I was enticed by the offering of western dressage at a local show. Gem won the blue ribbon, then took two 10-year-old girls to ribbons in trail class. Gem prefers to take them on fun trail rides and dressage exercises in the woodsy arena. With me, for happy gallops. This next season she will be competing in trail obstacle challenges.
I appreciate the opportunity and recognition for us elders, two-legged and four, for our skill, interest, and value.
