Peggy and Wolfie started their partnership four years ago, when Peggy’s daughter, USDF Certified Trainer, Mary Mahler, saw him pop up in a sale ad. Mary had worked with Wolfie (a Dutch Warmblood/Thoroughbred) several years prior and thought he might be a good fit for her school program in his semi-retirement. Upon telling Peggy about Wolfie, Peggy asked “Would he be a good horse for me?” Although quite surprised at her interest in acquiring her first horse at age 76, Mary put the wheels in motion to acquire Wolfie.
Peggy first started riding in pursuit of her horseback riding badge as a Girl Scout. She rode whenever the opportunities arose in her childhood and a college program. She introduced Mary to horses (also as a Girl Scout) and got back into riding lessons in the 80s. Other than some occasional lessons here and there, Peggy hadn’t ridden consistently until acquiring Wolfie.
“They really are the perfect team,” says Mary. “He makes her work a bit to put everything together, but he is so kind and takes pride in taking care of his doting rider.” Peggy and Wolfie performed Introductory Level Test B for their Century Club ride and are looking forward to conquering other tests in future rides.
