In 2014, I had just recuperated from my second back surgery, so I needed an exceptionally safe horse, and a friend suggested we check out this little palomino mare up north. We visited Libby on July 4th, and as we saddled her, firecrackers could be heard going off nearby. This sweet mare with a background in trail riding was unfazed, and she calmly took me around the property, offering a comfortable walk and an energetic trot. Her canter was quite horrible. Even so, I was not concerned; I appreciated her willing demeanor and rational mindset. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever again enter a show ring, so we brought Libby home and commenced with lessons in the arena.

Libby will express her opinion with long groans and repetitive snorts. It was clear she felt all the circles, repeating centerlines and halts were a huge waste of time. Despite this, her work ethic is excellent. She loved the attention and treats and showed dedication to learning more about this detailed job.

In our local dressage club, the All Dressage Association, we managed to win at Intro Level. A year or two later, we placed at Training Level. First Level has been more difficult as our canter still needs improvement. Presently, I am at a performance barn with Kristen Chasnis. Maybe Libby and I will eventually discover the secret to accomplishing a rhythmic, well-balanced canter. If not, our journey together has been fun, and every ride is blessed.
