I returned to riding in 1999 after my father passed away. He was my hero, and I felt a great loss. I decided it was time for me to do what I wanted to do for myself and something that would make me happy. My husband supported this even though he is not a horse person. I have loved horses my entire life. My parents said that even as a baby, I got so excited when I saw one, and “horse” was my first word.
Luckily, I found dressage trainer Enika Schembari, who encouraged me and encouraged her students to pursue this discipline.
After a fall and broken hip from a big Thoroughbred, I decided to stick to ponies. I showed a retired hunter pony in flat classes and dressage until he had to retire. I convinced my husband it was time for me to own my horse. I wanted a German Riding Pony because I could have a Warmblood in a pony package. Enika found me Midnight Sonata aka Angel. We have been a pair since 2006. Angel is her name in every way. She is unflappable and has been perfect for me.
After Enika moved, Angel and I moved to Dorbill Stables in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Patricia Cullen and Anne Mederios have been great coaches. I have been blessed with wonderful coaches during my riding career. At Dorbill, I’m riding with many women my age, as well as young women. It is such a warm welcoming barn. Everyone supports each other and their riding goals. I encourage everyone that it is never too late, and riding will make you new friends and make your life more rewarding. Horses are a great stress reliever. Riding with great teenagers will keep you young.
