2022 Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize Recipient: Jennifer Williams and Joppe K

Last year I was very honored and blessed to receive the Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize from The Dressage Foundation. This grant made it possible to advance to the next phase in my dressage journey as my horse, Joppe, and I work toward one day representing the USA at the highest levels of dressage sport. 

Joppe and I have had a stellar year of learning and growing together in our partnership. We went to Wellington, FL, in November to train with Oded Shimoni and stay at the farm where he is based. Having the opportunity to watch a top professional's system and have further access to such high-level training was incredibly beneficial. Oded was very generous with his knowledge and kept it a very positive and productive experience for Joppe and I throughout our time together. Being in Wellington gave us incredible access to so many international competitions with great footing and top judges. We were able to participate in a USEF training camp with Debbie McDonald and really utilized all opportunities that we could to learn, grow, and improve.  We were able to successfully debut Joppe into the International Grand Prix early in the season and have continually worked to develop his strength and confidence while in the ring.

This month I have been continuing my work back in Washington state with my long-time coach Christophe Theallet. Coming home early June and taking advantage of some of the fabulous west coast CDIs that have been implemented this year was a real treat. Joppe and I just celebrated our first international wins in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special at Thunderbird CDI 3* in Langley, Canada, and I am so blessed for the support that I have been given by so many to help get us to where we are. I am incredibly grateful for such supportive coaches, owners, family, and sponsors who have helped us with every facet of our development, and I cannot thank The Dressage Foundation enough for believing in us and helping us achieve this next stage of our goals.

Carol Lavell Prize

Who should apply for the $25,000 Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize:

  • A talented, committed, qualified rider whose plan is to reach and excel at the elite, international standards of high-performance dressage.
  • A horse and rider team that has received scores at the FEI Levels (Prix St. Georges or above) in National or International competitions.
  • A rider who shows merit and need.
  • A rider who respects horses and humans and is a model of horsemanship and sportsmanship.
  • A rider whose horse teammate has the potential to grow and succeed at the FEI Levels.

Applicants can re-apply for the Prize each year. The Prize must be used for training and competition expenses; it cannot be used for the purchase of a horse. Applications must be submitted on or before August 31 to be considered.
